Planned Itinerary

April 2026

A few photos from today's 4 mile walk at Thoresby Vale Country Park.

A lovely day and beautiful views.

March 2026

How lucky were we. The weather was perfect, dry, sunny and bright. The original walk was cancelled due to the rain we’d had over the past few weeks making the route impassable in places. However this was changed to the Creswell Loop walk. Meeting up at The Carrs as usual, another walking group was setting off from there. Guess what.. it was Southwell U3A. Even though we had done this walk before it was new to some of the group. Along the route we encountered a few horses from the riding stables doing their thing. Plus it was amazing to see the quarry being transformed as it is being filled. When the walk was finished we encamped in Welbeck courtyard for refreshments. What a lovely way to spend a morning I’m sure we all agreed. Brenda & Pam

We have a full calendar of walks planned and look forward to seeing old and new members. As usual we leave The Carrs (car park) at 10.00 am prompt.

Feb2026

We have a full calendar of walks planned and look forward to seeing old and new members. As usual we leave The Carrs (car park) at 10.00 am prompt.

Due to the very muddy conditions of the parking  for our proposed February  walk it was decided to swap it with April’s walk to Sherwood Forest. Although drizzly to begin with 5 of us enjoyed a  5mile circuit walk round the forest paths and heathland.

Our March walk will be lead by Brenda- Little Gringley, Retford. We leave the Carrs at 10am.

Nov 2025

We gathered at The Carrs as usual for our November walk but was undecided if we should go as it had started to snow. Being the troopers we are, it was decided to make a start and should the weather be against us we would abandon the walk.

What a good decision, the weather made a turn for the better with blue skies and sunshine for the majority of the walk. The walk started from Boughton Brake, then followed the footpath skirting the Walesby Activity Centre taking us into Walesby before heading back towards Ollerton and onto Boughton Brake.

It was a case of Boughton is so bracing (not Skegness). It was agreed that we were glad we ventured out.

On behalf of Pam and myself we would like to thank all in the walking group for the past year of support and making our outings so special and we look forward to the year ahead.

Oct 2025

When we at last got to the meet up point due to roadworks, that was the beginning of our adventure. What a wonderful day to spend a morning. The weather was perfect unlike the previous month and the scenery was beautiful. The trees were taking on their autumn colours and made our walk all the more glorious. The walk was called Shirebrook Woods who would have thought it was the old pit tip. How lucky are we to have this on our doorstep. We walked approximately 4 miles and didn’t get lost so that made it a bonus.

Our last walk of the year is round Boughton Brake.

After the November U3A meeting can all concerned with the walking group  meet to plan the 2026 programme. Your input and support is vital.

Brenda & Pam

We will be putting the 2026 calendar together soon. Any suggestions for future walks would be welcome.

Sept 2025

Unfortunately due to the inclement weather it was decided to cancel the September walk. We will now do the Shirebrook Wood walk in October, Boughton Brake in November as planned. Hope to see you all then.

We will be putting the 2026 calendar together soon. Any suggestions for future walks would be welcome.

Aug 2025

Twelve of us started our walk from Budby pumping station, the weather was cool, some cloud and a bit of sunshine, perfect for a nice walk!

The first part of the walk was through the woods to Hangar Hill, also know by the old name of Thynghowe. It is a place in the woods where the Vikings used to gather. Some of us had been here  before and we shared the information we had about it while we were standing on the hillside.

We contined our walk and arrived at Budby Heath. The month chosen for this walk was August because there would be a good chance that the heather would be in bloom, and it was!

We really enjoyed this beautiful area in Sherwood forest and after a good walk of 4 miles we arrived back at our cars.

July 2025

Thank you Mr G (Gerald) for a pleasant magical mystery tour around Peafield Woods. Who knew there was so many hills in Woodhouse we found them all I think in that area but a good time was had by all.

The chatter along the way highlights what our little group is all about. Just some of the comments made enroute. Refreshing, Jolly, Well-being, Laughter, Companionship, Friendly. Long may it continue.

Future walk dates (We leave The Carrs at 10.00 am prompt)

May 2025

For our May walk to Sherwood Forest 5 of us enjoyed a gentle  and sociable walk round the woodland trail lasting just over 1 ½ hours. The temperature was just right for walking and we encountered  a good number of seats dotted along the way!!!

Our next walk in June  (19th) will be led by Brenda- Rowthorne/Hardwick circuit.

July’s walk (17th) will be led by Gerald-Forest Town (details to follow)

March 2025

For our March walk we set off on the hottest day of the year so far. Our planned route started from Manor Park in Mansfield Woodhouse, we should have taken the path round the edge of the first field but unfortunately this was not passable, hence change of plan. From there we passed through woodland to the site of Nettleworth Manor and it’s outbuildings before heading towards Peafield Lane and back to our start point.

20th Feb 2025

The walk this month was lead by Val and Sonja who took us on paths which we hadn’t followed before. As usual Clumber didn’t disappoint, it is constantly being maintained and altered. The volunteers were busy cutting back the rhododendrons and making fencing/habitat homes with the branches. The purple crocus carpet was a picture. The walk ended at the courtyard cafeteria where we stopped for a drink and natter before we ended the lovely 5 mile.

16th January 2025

On a lovely sunny crisp morning 7 members of the walking group had a circular walk round Vicar water. We could see for miles and could see Clipstone head stocks in the distance.

The walking group meets the 3rd Thursday of the month.

Meeting  at The Carrs and we leave at 10.00 am prompt.

Walks can be subject to change please check the newsletter.

November 2024

On a cold and icy November morning 8 of us plus a well- behaved dog met at the Carrs. We decided to do a circular walk going by the Meden river, through to the Hills & Hollows heading towards Warsop Vale and back again. In parts it was very icy or muddy and the last leg we walked across the Carrs in the deep crisp snow to clean our muddy shoes. The 4 ¼ mile walk was enjoyed by all. Our next walk will be in January.

Now meeting on the third Thursday of the month.

All welcome. Meet 10.00am in the Carrs car park.

October 2024

The walk took us, 8 girls, from the Church in Cuckney to the water meadows between Cuckney and Norton. From there we went through the fields towards the Welbeck estate where we followed the road through the Deer Park. From there to Lady Margaret Hall where we crossed the road to Holbeck. Through the lane along the beautiful old church and then into the Welbeck estate again. We had a drink and a bite in the courtyard and enjoyed the sunshine. We were very lucky because it was a beautiful Indian summer day, perfect for our walk. We went back, almost the  same way as we came. We all could feel that it had been a good long walk, a bit more than 7 miles, but we had a great time!

September 2024 Walk - Creswell Loop

The walk started from the car park at Welbeck garden centre. From there we made our way to Creswell Crags and did a half tour of the lake before heading towards Steetley Quarry.

In past centuries, the Parish of Whitwell has contained many small quarries, which have provided stone for building, road making and lime burning.

One of these early quarries, a dolomite quarry, was worked at Steetley; it might have remained a small quarry except for two important factors.  First, the Industrial Revolution, which brought into being a new steel-making process requiring a heat-resisting furnace for which dolomite proved the most suitable material.  Second, the steel-making centre of Sheffield was only a few miles away.  So, in 1885, a new company called Steetley was formed and, from a modest beginning, a vast industrial organisation has developed.

Many of us knew about the quarry but not the vast expanse it covered.

After a short detour we followed the bridle path and headed back towards our start point. With a welcome drink and sausage roll at the end.

August 2024

Welbeck Abbey- South Tunnel Lodge

Our walk started from the Nottcuts Garden Centre car park and passed through a field which took in part of the Sculpture Trail. From there we followed the way marked walk towards the South Tunnel Lodge. A linear walk of just under 5 miles.

The 5th Duke of Portland was a recluse and lived in seclusion. Being rather eccentric he built an elaborate underground maze of tunnels in the 1800’s under his estate. Sadly these cannot be accessed but you just have to imagine what an undertaking it would have been at the time.

After the walk we had refreshments in the courtyard . The sausage rolls were a huge hit.

July 2024

The sun was blazing but 9 of us made it for the walk though. Starting from Gleadthorpe

P.S. we followed various track’s within the R.S.P.B. Site. The woodland shade was much appreciated, in total approximately 4 miles. We were on the lookout for wildlife along the route no ‘bares’ were roaming the tracks however we did see a Buzzards nest with chicks. A very pleasant walk was had by all. Thanks to Jen for navigating and planning the walk.

June 2024

Here comes the sun at last. After the past few walks it made a pleasant change to walk in dry weather. As always we weren’t disappointed with the Clumber Park walk. Taking the route around the lake and a little detour, we took in the beautiful views and sat chatting half way round. We were even given a rendition of ‘I saw a mouse’ in Dutch by Sonja. At the end of the walk we went to view the walled garden. Thanks to Val for a very pleasant walk.
